Advising

I advise PhD students in Industrial Organization and Applied Microeconomics at Stanford. My advising focuses on helping students develop rigorous (generally, but not uniquely) empirical research that addresses important economic questions using modern tools and rich datasets.

Students interested in working with me should reach out by email to set up a meeting. I ask that students come prepared to discuss a specific research idea (or several) and send a short (1-2 page) writeup or slide deck at least 24 hours in advance. A good research proposal will have (some) answers to the questions in this research pitch template.

I also have a few pieces of general advice for PhD students. Tl;dr take lots of shots; try to figure out what kind of researcher you want to be; strive to learn and don't be afraid to ask for help.

IO at Stanford

IO students are expected to regularly attend and be active participants in seminars, workshops and reading groups starting in their third year. Interested students across the board (including those in years 1 and 2) are also welcome to attend as they wish. Email the organizers to ask for permission if you're not sure.

  • IOPLUS (Faculty) Seminar - Weekly Tuesday sessions (12-1:15 PM)
  • IO Student Workshop - Weekly Thursday sessions (3-4:30 PM)
  • Pat Bajari IO Lunch - Weekly Friday sessions (12-1 PM)
